Ruoholahti Canal

Year: 2011

City: Helsinki

Country: Finland

Concept Description

The 1990’s saw a number of projects start in Helsinki where former industrial seafront areas have been redeveloped for residential use. One of these was the Ruoholahti district in the western part of central Helsinki, where a new canal was constructed through the residential area. The shorelines of the Ruoholahti canal have been lit at a relatively low level, creating a pleasant and light environment. The residential buildings have not been the focus, but they form a background that defines the area. Care has also been taken to ensure sufficient lighting for safe access to the boats.
